Berea Can’t Fight Back to Win against Methodist University
Berea College falls 76-61 to Methodist University on Sunday evening. After ending their losing streak just the night before, this loss hit home for some of the Mountaineers. With only one player scoring double digits for Berea, it seemed as if there regular star players just couldn’t hit their normal shots.
Berea took and early lead, winning the tip off and going on a 4-0 run in the first two minutes; But the Monarchs were quick to change that. Berea never saw a lead again after the first three minutes of the game.
Although the usual high scorers for Berea were not on their A-game tonight, Dyonta Bizzle Brown definitely bounced back from his low scoring game the night before; which Bizzle Brown blames on getting treatment for his injured ankle. Being the only Berea player to score double digits and was the second best in steals, Bizzle Brown couldn’t do it on his own. Bizzle Brown explains that, “we played some good defense, but we just couldn’t put the ball in the basket as a team.”
A young player has also made continuous statements for this Berea team. Mitchell “MJ” Embree shot 2 for 4 from the arc in yesterday’s game then did it again this evening making 2 of his 3 3-point attempts. The freshman played just twenty minutes in today’s game and shot two major three’s for this Berea team. Embree explains that “here lately I have been confident with my shot.” With Embree only being a freshman and getting better as the season goes on he states that “shooting at a good percentage today and yesterday has just added more confidence along with my coaches encouraging me to keep shooting.”
So is this team just too young to bounce back from their 4-10 losing record? Or will they take the rest of their games this season and run with them? “I do believe we are a young team, but we knew that before the start of the season,” Embree explains. “We have the potential to be a great team if we continue to come together and keep working,” he continues. With the 11 more games before tournament time, this Berea team has time to turn their season around. They will travel to Midway University on Tuesday to take on the Eagles. This could be their first away win of their 2017-2018 season.
