Mountaineers not enough to cool down Scots

Berea College hosted USA tough conference opponent Covenant College in the 2018 Carbon Neutral Green Game. Covenant College is currently on a 4 game winning streak. It came down to the wire where Covenant scored a go-ahead tip-in shot to defeat Berea 68-66. The first half of the 4th annual Carbon Neutral Game was a low scoring one. The Scots left the first half leading 29-27. Berea was led by freshman guard Deandre Lightfoot with 16 points in the first half. Berea shot 20 percent from the 3PT. line which affected their scoring in the first half. The Mountaineers played great defense on Covenants Patjo Twagirayezu who scored 30 points in Berea's last meeting against Covenant in December. On Wednesdays meeting he went scoreless. In the second half Berea was fueled by the energy of the crowd and the bench. In the second half Berea saw a turning point when sophomore forward Dakota Mays stole the ball with less than 10 minutes left to play and soared for an emphatic dunk. The Seabury Center rumbled from the reaction of the crowd and Berea's bench. This dunk fueled the Mountaineers to keep a small lead over Covenant for the next 8 minutes of play. In the last 2 minutes of the game, the score stayed knotted at 64-64. Covenant scored off an offensive rebound with 44 seconds left and then freshman guard Torrell Carter came down the court to tie up the game. Covenant then scored off of another offensive rebound with 4 seconds to go. Lightfoot dribbled down the court quickly to shoot a game-winning 3PT shot that did not go in. The energy in the gym was quickly released when Deandre's shot bounced off the rim as the clock hit zero. It settled the crowd that Berea was not going to be competing in the big USA South Conference tournament that was coming up in the next 2 weeks. The Mountaineers will finish the remainder of their season at the Seabury Center however and will continue to be rooted for. The Mountaineers will play conference opponent Maryville College on February 10 at 3 PM.
