WHAT A COMEBACK!
What a game! Berea Mountaineers men's soccer team makes a huge comeback in there season opener to defeat Johnson University 4-3 in overtime. This game was a battle for the Mountaineers about all game. They fought, battled, and clawed there to a victory against Johnson University.
The game started out a little rough for the Mountaineers, with Johnson University controlling the ball at the beginning of the game. That finally caught up to the Mountaineers as #14 Issac Sinkhorn scored the first goal for Johnson at 17 minute mark of the game. After the first goal, head coach Ruben Rodriquez made some substitution into the game, and the dividends paid off greatly. At the 20 minute mark #20 Junior Gyamfi tied the game up 1-1. Things where looking up and the energy was good for Berea. There was not much action between the two schools for the rest of the second half; until with 47 seconds left in the half. A shot was fired near the net, but was stopped by Berea goalie Clay Schaeffer , but the ball got free from Schaeffer, and Johnson University's Caleb Moore took advantage and gave Johnson a 2-1 lead the momentum going in the half time. '
The second half started out as even match with both teams battling back and forth until the 62th minute of the game. Again #14 Issac Sinkhorn for Johnson got past the Mountaineers defense and made the score 3-1 in favor of Johnson University. Things were not looking up for the squad as they were down 2 goals and time starting to become a factor. However, that was not the case to be. The turning point of the came was when Berea scored 2 goals in the 77th minute of the game! The first one by #27 Jose Fernandez and the other by #20 Junior Gyamfi for his second goal of the game. These was the change of momentum needed for the Mountaineers squad as they took the same energy in to overtime. In overtime, Berea put the pressure on Johnson, as they keep threatening to score and take the victory. Finally, #19 Joshua Szidik beat the defenders, and kicked the Mountaineers to victory in the 6th minute of overtime.
This was a thrilling victory for Berea men's soccer team. As it should that this team has no quit, and they have already surpassed last seasons win total. With the energy and momentum on their side they plan to take that with them as the season moves on!
