Mountaineers Top Ferrum College 86-73
Berea College welcomed Ferrum College to a beating. Once up by as much as 35 points the Mountaineers almost showed no mercy. The team led in field goals, rebounds, and second chance opportunities, this game seemed over at half time.
Berea started out slow in the first 2 minutes allowing Ferrum to go on a 8-0 run. That quickly changed once the Mounties got hot. Berea went on a 30-2 run not allowing the Panthers to score until the last 6 minutes of the first half. The Mountaineers led the half by 24.
Leading the Mountaineers was sophomore Terique Miller with 31 points making 7 of his 11 3-point shots. Miller was also tied with Torell Carter and Jair Jackson for steals, having 3 a piece. Miller has only played 6 of the Mounties 15 games and is currently averaging 17 points a game. He's made it clear that ever since he's been back this semester, that he is the leader of this team. However, he's also averaging 34 minutes per game. Will Miller be able to stay on his A-game playing the minutes he's playing or is he going to start to tire out?
Things started getting interesting when Berea fans started getting under the skin of Ferrum bench players. Berea College students Isaiah Esham and Jose Gonzalez always know how to get loud during basketball games, but last night the did more than just that. Both students hit a nerve on the Ferrum bench causing two Panthers to mouth off to the student section. With things heating up, the Mounties were still on top and never lost the lead. "Jose was telling me that the bench players were getting mad and I assumed that they heard us talking about them," explained Esham. "They eventually mouthed 'lets go' to us and pointed outside as if they wanted to fight," he continues. "My first thought was that I obviously wasn't going to fight them. It was just funny to see the other team get mad."
The Mountaineers are currently taking a lead on Averett University. could this could possibly be the start of a winning streak for the end of these Mounties' season? Regardless, we will still be able to watch this young team grow and develop through the rest of the season and see what the returners will do next year.
