Tennessee Football on the Up Rise
Tennessee football experienced the worst season they have ever had in their football history. They had a record of 4-8 and (0-8) in conference; that is the first time they had ever gone 4-8. With this happening, came the firing of former head coach Butch Jones. After the firing came one of the worst messes in coaching search history.
Tennessee vols athletic director John Currie was the man looking for the vols new coach. Well he had his main target picked out and was ready to go get him. Well that fell through and he panicked so badly he then flew out to Columbus, OH to seriously try Greg Schiano. When the leaks came out about this, every Tennessee fan lashed out so harshly and for so long that Currie and Schiano actually backed out of the deal they had plan. A riot had actually broke out in Knoxville because of this. After Currie and Schiano backed out, it was understood that each signed a MOU, memorandum of understanding. That could have cost the university a lot of money if the chancellor had signed it too, but with her signature not there the MOU was in invalid.
After that debacle, Currie set his sights on Mike Gundy, the head football coach of Oklahoma State University. That was quickly turned down by him even though the money was substantially more. Jeff Brohm the head coach at Purdue was next on Currie's list but everything fell through on that. After that, Currie seriously went after Dave Doeren, head football coach at NCST. That also did not set well with the fans because his track record was not that good, but thankfully he turned it out down. After this Currie went rogue, no one in the UT department knew where his was at. He ended up in Washington trying to hire Mike Leach, head coach at Washington State. After the department found where he was, he was ordered to come back to Knoxville, where after he was shortly fired. Through all that mess he was eventually fired.
After the firing, it did not take long to find our new AD in Phillip Fulmer. A former head coach and national championship coach. He deeply loved Tennessee and automatically went on to the coaching find trail. It did not take long for him to find his top 3 candidates. They were Kevin Steele, Mel Tucker, and Jeremy Pruitt, all 3 defensive of coordinators in the SEC. After about a week in interviewing each person a couple times. He finally settled on his guy. On December 7, 2018, Jeremy Pruitt the defensive coordinator at was Alabama was hired to become our next head football coach. From where we started to and where we ended this was consider a home run hire.
Now present day, Pruitt with a finalized staff that has huge SEC ties and can kill it on the recruiting trail. There is a new energy that surrounds rocky top, that has everyone buzzing and excited and ready for the start of the 2018 college football season.
