Lady Mounties Ride a Big Second Quarter in Blowout Win
The Berea College Lady Mountaineers used a 30 point quarter to defeat the Lady Knights of Kentucky Christian University on Tuesday night 89-62. The Lady Mounties had a slow start to the game that saw them have a four point deficit after the first quarter. However, the press defense saved them again as Berea used their length to disrupt the guards of the Lady Knights, forcing them into committing 14 second quarter turnovers. This spark that was generated defensively quickly produced offensive results.
The three point shot in the first half was the main benefactor of the defensive pressure created by Berea. The Lady Mountaineers shot 42.9% from long range in the first half and saw Kiley Barnard come off the bench and hit 3 big threes to help Berea take control of the game. As the dust settled at the end of the half Berea had outscored the Lady Knights 30-9. Barnard led all scorers at the half and Adriana Williams chipped in 9 to help as Berea took a 42-25 lead into halftime.
The second half saw much of the same as Berea dominated the third quarter and cruised to the end of the game as it ended 89-62. The defensive pressure is the real winner in the game as it obviously left the Lady Knights at a very large disadvantage in their full court offense. KCU did, however, end up shooting over 40% for the game albeit many of those points came towards the end of the game with the outcome had long been determined. The Lady Mountaineers were led in scoring by Kailey Barnard, Kristen Barnes, and Jaime Roberts all with 16 points and Bri Lanham contributed 14 points in the effort. The Lady Knights were led in scoring by Shelby Hall who poured in 15 points on 50% shooting.
The Lady Mountianeers improve to 14-2 and will play Huntingdon on Saturday at 1 o’clock in the Seabury Center. The Lady Knights of Kentucky Christian fall to 8-11 and will travel to Wyoming, Michigan to face Silver Lake College on Saturday and Grace Bible College on Sunday.
