Lady Mountaineers Lose Their 11 Game Winning Streak
Piedmont Lady Lions faced Berea College Mountaineers looking for revenge after the Mountaineers won the last face off 72-65 at their place. This time around, the Mountaineers welcomed the Lions, but took a hard loss of 70-79 which ended their winning streak of 11 games.
The Mountaineers started off with a rough first half, but came out of half time and stayed fighting the whole game, never letting Piedmont get a lead more than 9. Both teams worked the floor causing a lead change of 9.
In the first, Berea shot 35% from the field and behind the free throw line shot 80%. Meanwhile, Piedmont hit some big shots in the paint and outside the 3 point line. The Lions shot 53% from the field and 62% from behind the arc in the first half, respectively.
In the second half, BC’s numbers went down. In the second, they shot just 31% from the field and could not convert a stop under the goal with Piedmont’s 26 rebounds. The Lions outshot them in field, 3-pointers, and free throws. Aggression from both sides caused a shockingly high number of fouls by the end of fourth, a total of 59.
Mountaineers came within six points with 1:54 remaining in the contest but they went back-to-back with missed lay ups, giving Piedmont the advantage of two possessions and went down 68-77. BC went into a full press, but it was not enough to overcome the Lions eventual 79-70 win.
Berea College’s Zacchea Small led the team with 16, followed by Adriana Williams’ 14, Kelsey Tippitt with 13, and Marley Lawson chipped in 10. Piedmont’s Amari Price led her team with 19, followed by Bridgette Kelly’s 14, and Carlie Shields put up 13 on the board.
“Piedmont is a hard matchup for us,” Barnes said. “They dared us to shoot jump shots and, credit to them, they did a nice job of following their game plan. But I’ll look forward to making adjustments and having another shot at them in the conference.”
In the Southern Conference, Piedmont’s win placed them first, followed by Maryville, dropping Berea from 1st in the conference to third. Berea will be playing at home Thursday against No. 9 Wesleyan.
