What It Means To Be a Portland Trail Blazers Fans
The fans of the Portland Trail Blazers are a tight knit community. Blazers’ fans consist of a bunch of individuals with a lot of hope, pride, patience, and optimism. Whether you are from Portland or not, being a Blazers’ fan is something, you take a lot of pride in, no matter the outcome. Being a part of RipCity is an exciting experience.
My first NBA game with the Portland Trail Blazers was in Atlanta, GA. I loved seeing the crowd of people, cheering on their favorite players. Watching the seats fill up with fans sporting red, white, and black. Some even have player's name on their back. Being a Blazers’ fan, comes with the understanding that you are in for an exciting game no matter what the score turns out to be. That game in Atlanta, we won 113-97 and I can still remember Damian putting up the first 9 points for his team. I was beyond hype for that game because by half time we was up by 17 and that was the largest half time lead for them that season. Even when I have to watch the game from home, I show the same enthusiasm. Every single time I see that giant RipCity symbol in the middle of the court, I am ready for a good game.
Being a Blazer fan, whether it be during the Walton era, Drexler era, Roy era, or even the present day Lillard era, seeing the same lights dim and hearing the music gets everyone pumped up to see our boys take the court to show up and show out.
Unfortunately, it can be a tough job being a Blazers’ fan. The only time they have won an NBA Championship was 1977 against the Philadelphia 76ers. The Blazers have been in three finals, their last appearance having been in 1992. They have had some tremendous runs, but have also suffered from some unfortunate downfalls. They seem to have a track record for some heartbreaking injuries and losing key players. Blazers’ fans have gone through a lot.
One thing that surprised me about this team was their drafts. Did you know that Portland picked Greg Oden over Kevin Durant? They also picked Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan. Fun facts.
Aside from the hard times, there have been some glory moments for the Blazers. Recently, 2018 NBA All Star draft, Damian Lillard just became the fastest Blazer to reach 10,000 points. On top of that, in his recent game against the Sacramento Kings, Lillard dropped 50 points in merely 3 quarters.
Though the Portland Trail Blazers have experienced their fair share of ups and downs, their fans are always here for them. Being a Blazers’ fan myself, I cannot imagine turning my back on my team. Especially, my man Damian.
Blazers fans always have been and always will be Blazers’ fans.
