Berea Mountaineers Falls to Asbury Eagles on Double Header Matchup
Berea Mountaineers gathered at home on a sunny Tuesday afternoon for a double header starting at 5. Losing the first game 4-8, the girls had a chance to redeem themselves of the loss, but ended up going 2-6, losing the second game.
The game began around 8pm with #2 Courtney Baker pitching at number 7 for the Asberry Eagles, Abi White. With the resilience from Baker, she was able to stop the batter from progressing to first base. Second batter matched up with Baker was Jade Montoya, number 16, who walked due to Baker’s high pitches. Next up, Baker pitched to #3 of the Eagles, Faith Day, who obtained one base hit. With two on base and one out, Baker begins to get ready to bat to number two, freshman Juliann Kirby, who would go on and bunt the ball in to sacrifice for Day to score. Bases are loaded. She successfully reaches first base from the bunt. Twenty-two for Asbury, Deana Phillips, up to bat next successfully gains another base hit for the Eagles. Phillips sends Montoya home. At the top of the first, Eagles lead Berea at home 3-0.
After Baker delivers three spontaneous outs, Berea was up to bat. Against pitcher, Juliann Kirby, senior Lillian Setters, was first. However, Setters was not able to strive past the persistent efforts of the Eagles, becoming Berea’s first out. Next was number seven, Jacqui Howard, who was out after a full count. The third to bat was number 18, Kourtney Parker, who was the first for the Bereans to touch base in the first inning. However, after a base hit by 22, Annelise Hackney, Parker was unable to remain on base being the last out the Eagles needed in the first inning.
Entering the second inning, Phillips came back to bat for the Eagles, and gained her a two base hit. Junior Amara Wylie made it her mission when she swung the ball down center field, to send Phillips home, making Eagle’s lead four to nothing, and Katie Kleier, number eighteen was not far behind her, scoring another run, making their lead by five runs. Baker held down the mound and achieved her three outs putting Berea off the diamond, but back on the bat beginning with sophomore Mattie Shivel, who gives her team one base. Kendra Hubbard, showed up for Berea, being walked by Eagles’ pitcher, became the second on base, giving the Berea crowd hope and something to cheer for. The score caught up-not by much- five to two.
In the remaining innings, Berea struggled to maintain their positions on base, and Asbury was always prepared to score. A significant turn of events within the game was when Berea’s Kourtney Parker received a ball count while an illegal pitch called on Eagles’ replacement pitcher, Paige Hill. Despite the change of pitcher for Berea (three times), it was not enough to save the game. The Mountaineers fall to the Eagles in a 6-2 matchup.
