How Kyle Korver has made his legacy from behind the arch
The 3 point line has been one of the most important factors in the game of basketball ever since its creation in 1979, and for many players including Ray Allen, Reggie Miller, and Steph Curry it has been the staple of their playstyle and allowed them to have long and successful careers in the NBA. Kyle Korver is one of these 3 point specialists that has hallowed himself out a spot in NBA history as one of the greatest shooters of all time. Korver is nearing third all-time in three pointers made and lead the league in 3 point percentage in 2010 at a staggering 53.6% and currently leads the cavaliers shooting 43.9% from distance. Korver also held the record for most consecutive games with at least one 3 pointer made with 127 consecutive games between November 2012 and March 2014, but the record was recently broken by Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors.
Kyle Korver has always been in involved with the game of basketball and his eternal love affair with the 3 point line continues today. Korver attended college at Creighton University and was drafted by the Nets in 2003 with the 51st pick in the NBA draft. He was doubted very heavily when he was drafted because he only specialized in 3 pointers; in fact, he was doubted so much that the Nets traded him to the 76ers for a copy machine and cash considerations. He has played for 5 teams throughout his 15 year career, he has played for the Nets, 76ers, Jazz, Bulls, Hawks, and currently he plays for the Cavaliers. Korver has always had a spot on NBA rosters because of his consistency shooting from deep and he has changed the way that the NBA views shooters and how they play. When asked about Korver’s playstyle and approach to the game his coaches say that his footwork and ability to maneuver around screens combined with his always game-like intensity establish him as one of the NBA’s most deadly shooters and shapes how many shooters approach the game today.
When you hear the name Kyle Korver you may not think of him as one of the best to ever play the game, but it’s hard to argue that he isn’t one the best shooters to ever play. Korver may not be the conventional shooting guard because of his lack of versatility, but make no mistake this guy is a hooper and is liable to go off for 20-30 points on any given night. He may only have one all-star appearance and no NBA championships, but Kyle Korver’s impact on the game is undeniable. Many teams overlooked Korver on that draft night in 2003, but that’s something that Korver will never forget and he has used that as motivation to keep him going. It’s crazy to think that one of the NBA’s most prolific shooters was once traded for a copying machine, I’m sure that the Nets are looking back and kicking themselves in the rear for that deal.
