Mountaineers Suffer Setback to Scots
BEREA, Ky – Berea Softball has been knocked out of the playoffs after dropping its final game against Covenant College in the form of an 15-6 five-inning decision at home on Friday evening. The Hilltoppers moved to 6-18 overall on the season with the setback and to 2-10 in USA South Conference play.
Covenant came out swinging on Friday evening, scoring four runs in the first inning to take a lead that it would not give up. Berea struggled to get anything going in the first two innings unable to score a run. The Scots would strike again in the third inning as they would score on two singles and on a walk.
The home squad finally got things going in the bottom of the third as they would bring in 5 runs and get the score to 7-4. The Mountaineers would add one more one in the bottom of the fourth on a double by Abby Nash.
For the rest of the game is was all Covenant. The Scots added 8 runs in the top of the fifth to take a commanding 15-5 lead. This game was the 13th run-rule victory over the Mountaineers this year.
Only on of the Mountaineer’s pitchers, senior Jacqui Howard, saw action in the game and had a tough go of things allowing 12 hits and 15 runs. Tyler Epps was the winning pitcher for the visiting Scots only allowing 2 hits and 3 runs while striking out three batters.
Offensively, 3 batters doubled for the Mountaineers, Jacqui Howard, Abby Nash and Annelise Hackney. All RBI were accounted for by the trio of Abby Nash, Lillian Setters, and Annelise Hackney, who all had 2 apiece. The Scots had the lone home run of the game which was brought in by Shade Epes. Six players brought in runs for Covenant.
Up next, the Mountaineers will be back in action at home hosting Spalding University of Louisville on April 11th for the first of two non-conference series from the BC Sports Complex. Berea will play a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. on Wednesday against the Golden Eagles.
