Some Gas Left In the Tank

The last game of the season is a critical statement in any sport. You always want to go out on a good note to look forward to the next season. It seemed like Josh Wilson was really trying to do something for his team with seven strikeouts and only allowing four runs to score. But sadly, the Mountaineers will be ending this season with a bitter taste in their mouth starting their final double-header against the Transylvania Pioneers with a loss of 4-2.

While the first inning was quite uneventful, the second inning started off with a bang as Devin Belleville jacks a homerun over the left-center fence. This brought the fans and the dugout alive as his teammates rushed to home plate to congratulate him.

To start out a game with a spark like that you would think this could create some momentum for the Mounties to overcome their 4-28 record. However, this hype soon died as Berea could not get anything else going for them. Besides a double from Summey and Nick Bottom’s RBI in the 4th inning, there was little contribution from the rest of the team at the plate.

However, on the defensive side Berea was doing all they could in order to seal another win for the seniors. In one specific instance, Tanner took a ground ball off the chest to make the play at first to get just the first out of the fifth inning. Although it may have looked like a routine play to most, you could see just how badly he wanted this game. To be beaten down for the better part of the season, you could tell there was a little bit of fight left in him to at least try to make this season seem like a successful one.

So even though our Mountaineers could not get a win for the fans or their teammates, we know they still had a little bit of gas left in the tank. From Devin’s homerun to Tanner’s impressive play, you could see how badly Berea wanted this win. Although, they still have one last opportunity to prove that they are not ready to give up in their final game of the season following this loss.
