NBA Playoffs or Basketball Brawl?
It is game four of the NBA playoffs between the Miami Heat and the Philadelphia 76ers... Or so we thought. The game went bad quickly and you could tell that emotions were coming into play in this game. With a technical foul for players on both teams and a personal foul for Sixers guard, Ben Simmons, this was not your average basketball game.
The fights all started with Goran Dragic got hit by Sixer, Robert Covington. Teammate, James Johnson, quickly took offense to the hit and shoved Covington towards the basket. 76er, Ben Simmons, was not far behind during this encounter and did what any good teammate would do and interfered getting in Johnson's face. This then resulted in coaches, players and officials to break up the three players before it resulted in anything more.
76ers, Joel Embiid, came from the other end of the court to also defend his team as Simmons did. Heat Coach Erik Spoelstra stepped in to break up any and all players involved.
Afterwards is when Simmons receives the call for the personal foul that he committed before the brawl broke out.
During the interviews Johnson explained that he knows Covington and realizes that he is not a dirty player, however, he also realizes that it is playoff time and guys are willing to make plays to make a statement. Johnson also explains that for Covington to make a foul like that, there had to me a reason for it. Regardless if the motive was to "ignite his team or to get his guys going in a different way" Johnson seems as if there are no hard feelings. He also later explains that "Ben [Simmons] and I, just two guys protecting our own teams."
Simmons also supported this idea of just being there for his team during his interview explaining, "If someone is going to push my teammates, I'll be there for them. Everyone's got my back on my team, and I think it's vice versa with the Miami Heat."
Although the players had already received consequences during the game, it is said that officials will be reviewing the incident and determining if those involved will be receiving a deeper and more severe punishment for the encounter.
It is claimed that 76ers coach Brett Brown predicted that game four was going to be a physical game based off of game three. Between both teams, in game three, there were 56 combined fouls as well as each team receiving three technical fouls. So, if you thought this game or any future games between these two team throughout the rest of this series, you are just lying to yourself.
The 76ers went on to defeat the Heat 106-102 and leads the series 3-1. The two will continue this series on Tuesday, April 24 as Miami tries to fight for a win... Hopefully without actually fighting.
